Whether you are on your way back from Nikko and stopping off at Utsunomiya, or you’ve spent the day sightseeing around Utsunomiya, having ‘train times’ handy is the best way to make sure you make the most of Utsunomiya’s diverse nightlife.
Here we’ve listed different ways of traveling back to Tokyo in the evening (and the best way if you have a JR Pass!).
Utsunomiya has two main stations, JR Utsunomiya station and Tobu-Utsunomiya station. JR Utsunomiya (shown above) is the station most used by visitors from abroad as the JR Pass is valid here and it’s where the bullet train (Shinkansen) stops. This is also the station where you change if you are visiting Nikko.
If you have a JR Pass or you are looking for the quickest way back to Tokyo (50-60 min) you will want to use the bullet train. See below for the train times after 18:00. (You can also click on the link below to search trains from Utsunomiya station to your destination)

If you are on a budget, the cheapest way to travel back to Tokyo in the evening is by local train. It takes 100-110 min and is not as comfortable as the bullet train but is roughly HALF PRICE.

Tobu-Utsunomiya Station which operates the Tobu line is also in the center of Utsunomiya. Please do not mistake this with the JR station as it runs fewer trains and takes longer to Tokyo. However, if you are willing to stay on the train for 2.5 hours, this is the cheapest way to travel to Tokyo (Asakusa is the last stop).
