Talking about 'things to do' in Motegi town

We are back this month with our popular interviews series, featuring towns and cities near Tokyo, and this month we are talking about Motegi Town (茂木町) in Tochigi prefecture! Located about two hours from Tokyo, it is a beautiful area for anyone seeking to escape the bustling city life and experience the charm of rural Japan.

As always, I’ve been in touch with the people who know best, and this month I had a long talk with Shota Iso from the Motegi Town’s Commercial Industry & Tourism Department. He shared some very useful tips on what to see and do in Motegi Town.

Curious to find out more? Here is my interview below, and I am confident that after reading it, you will be eager to add Motegi Town to your list of places to visit.

Which is the best season to come to Motegi Town?

Motegi Town (茂木町) holds festivals year-round, and as such, it’s a town where you can enjoy an exciting atmosphere during any time of year. There are also plenty of tourist sites that are rich in history and nature, captivating many people who come to visit.

Spring

Spring in Motegi Town is almost like straight out of a children’s tale. Two fantastic festivals, the “Flower Festival” and “Spring Festival”, are held during this time. The Flower Festival is held at Mitsumata Gunseichi (ミツマタ群生地), often referred to as the “Fairy Forest”(妖精の森), where you will find yourself in a wide-open, fantastic setting. The best time to come see it is around March 20th. Around this time, the place is packed with sightseers, even to the point that it ends up on the news!

The Spring Festival takes place along the river near the Michi-no-eki Motegi (道の駅もてぎ), with many stalls lined up offering a variety of products and things to see. At night, the cherry blossoms are lit up and called yozakura (夜桜), which makes for a mesmerizing illumination for observers. In addition, the cherry blossoms near Shiroyama Park (城山公園) also bloom in a breathtaking display of beauty, creating the ideal picnic setting. This, of course, is not just popular among locals: Many tourists come to see this area as well!

Summer

Summer is just as wonderful. During the summer festival, around 5000 individual fireworks are launched into the air, painting the night sky with a wide array of colors. It is a sight worth seeing, and many town residents come out to spectate this event. Besides this, you also have the Ohse Kanko Yana (大瀬観光やな), which consists of weirs that are set up around mid-July. While experiencing the rush of the river around your feet, you have the opportunity to catch sweetfish with your bare hands. This is especially popular among children and their families. Both of these fireworks and fishing experiences will make for unforgettable summer memories.

Autumn

There is an autumn festival that takes place, in which you can enjoy an abundant amount of food through the numerous food stands set up throughout the festival. It’s an event where you can satisfy all your fall food cravings.

Additionally, the Red Spider Lily Week, or “Higan-Bana week” (彼岸花ウィーク), is held at Shiroyama Park in September. The park’s ridge and hillsides are shaded in a deep, red hue, producing a spectacular array of colors that set it apart from the views you see in the spring.

What are the top 3 attractions you cannot miss in Motegi Town?

#1: Michi-no-eki Motegi

The first place you need to see is Michi-no-eki Motegi (道の駅もてぎ). Michi-no-eki is very similar in function to a farmer’s market, and this one in Motegi actually the first Michi-no-eki that was opened in Tochigi Prefecture. Over a million visitors pass through its doors every year, a testament to its timeless popularity. Here, you can enjoy a wide variety of fun activities. For starters, there is a busy produce market within the area. It offers locally-sourced, fresh fruits and vegetables that often sell out before noon.

Then, you have some restaurants to eat some delicious food. A go-to food for visitors and locals alike is yuzu shio ramen (ゆず塩ラーメン). This specific ramen has won the Michi-no-eki Gourmet Grand Prix (道の駅グルメグランプリ) three years in a row, due to its yuzu aroma and perfectly-balanced salt seasoning. And once you’ve finished eating the ramen, I highly recommend you end your meal with Otome milk ice cream (おとめミルクアイス). Using fresh tochi-otome strawberries, there’s nothing better to eat for a perfect dessert after a yuzu shio ramen meal.

Outside the area, you have public spaces such as Jukkoku Kasen Park (十石河川公園) and SL Park, where families can have a lot of fun together. Not only is there a flower garden along the river with seasonal flowers to see, but if you’re lucky enough, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the Moka Railway (真岡鉄道) steam locomotive coming down the railroad line as it blows its train whistle.

#2: Mobility Resort Motegi

Next, I’d like to introduce you to Mobility Resort Motegi (モビリティリゾートもてぎ). This theme park, consisting of seven different areas that you can enjoy all-day, is built in the middle of a forest around the concept of mobility. Within the motor sports area, there’s a world-renowned motorized sports facility that hosts racing circuits, which attracts many visitors from abroad. Of course you can watch the exciting races held there, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also a theme park within the resort area for people of all ages to enjoy throughout the day.

To be honest, you probably won’t have enough time in one day to experience everything it has to offer. Nonetheless, it’s the perfect place for families and their children. Lastly, the resort also has a hotel where you can relax and unwind during your stay. Take it easy at the theme park after watching a thrilling race on the circuit.

#3: Weir Fishing

One more recommendation I’d like to make is Ohse-kankou Yana, which I mentioned earlier. Here, you’ll get a chance to experience a traditional way of fishing in Japan. I can’t overemphasize how special it feels catching your own sweetfish and cooking it. Weir fishing, or “yana” (やな), is a type of fishing that involves building a structure made of wood and bamboo. Placing this structure parallel to a river, it catches the sweetfish by taking advantage of their natural instincts to swim against the current.

After you’ve caught the sweetfish, you can grill them on the spot over an “irori” (囲炉裏). An irori is a traditional Japanese fireplace that consists of a layer of charcoal spread out in a square-shape pit on the floor. The irori served as an indispensable household feature in pre-modern Japan, performing a wide range of functions from warming the house to cooking food.

Sweetfish that are cooked slowly over an irori have a nice crunch on the outside and a fluffy texture on the inside, allowing you to savor the unique taste of Japanese freshwater fish. And to draw out as much umami as possible from the fish, you also sprinkle a dash of salt on it. Foreign tourists are always surprised and delighted by this special experience.

Weir fishing for sweetfish is only open from July to October. But at any time of the year, you can always drop by the canteen to enjoy eating fresh fish caught from the river!

What do you recommend to buy as a souvenir?

There are a lot of sought-after items you can buy!

The Baumkuchen sold at the cafe “Baumkobo Yuzu no Ki” (バウム工房ゆずの木) within Michi no-eki-Motegi is very popular as a souvenir. In addition to unique, local flavors such as yuzu-flavored and strawberry-flavored Baumkuchen, there are seasonally exclusive flavors available as well depending on what time of year you visit.

The gift shop Keyaki (けやき) is also highly recommended if you are looking for souvenirs. Motegi’s delicious yuzu fruits are used to make yuzu jams and dressings that are sold here. Because fresh ingredients are used, the scent and taste of these products are absolutely wonderful. Shopping for souvenirs has never been more fun!

Is there anything special for those traveling with kids?

For those traveling with families, I want to suggest going to a nature-rich, beautiful area within Mobility Resort Motegi called Hello Woods’ (ハローウッズ).

There are tons of activities that almost make you feel as if you were a creature of the forest. There are eight ZIP lines in total in two different locations, with the longest one being 343 meters long! Only birds could understand how it feels flying down one of these ZIP lines.

In other areas, you can explore towers and suspension bridges, get lost in the excitement of running through tunnels and mazes, play on the sky swing, or relax and enjoy the view from an elevated terrace. By just walking through the woods, you’ll come across many critters and insects.

On top of these things, there are also special crafting workshops held depending on the season. You can build your very own work of art with materials provided straight from nature. It’s an opportunity to share some special time with your family while crafting things.

A campsite also exists within Hello Woods’ where you and your family can enjoy a camping experience! With a barbecue and fire pit, along with a great view for stargazing, you can immerse yourself in a special exprience surrounded by nature.

Beyond this, there are a wide selection of programs you can enjoy as a family, such as going on treasure hunts in the forest and going on exploratory tours.

All in all, it’s a great opportunity for children to explore and learn new things through nature. Please do visit if you would like to create some everlasting memories with your family!
