Things to know about SEPTEMBER 2025

September is when school re-starts and many destinations become less crowded. It is also when the heat and humidity of summer transition to the milder, more pleasant conditions of early autumn.  Although it is rare for Typhoons to make direct hits on Tokyo and nearby areas, they can sometimes bring heavy rain and strong winds when they reach the southern regions of Japan or come close to Tokyo. Despite this, September is when the landscapes start shifting towards autumn colours, particularly in the higher elevations of Tochigi and Gunma prefectures.

What to wear in SEPTEMBER

Pack lightweight summer clothing (T-shirts, light tops) for warmer days, but also include long-sleeved shirts, a light jacket, or a cardigan for cooler evenings and days later in the month. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) might still be needed, especially early in the month.

*Packing an umbrella or raincoat is unnecessary, as these are available very cheaply anywhere in Japan.

Holidays & Crowds in SEPTEMBER

September is less crowded than peak seasons like Golden Week in May or August’s Obon holiday. However, there are two public holidays: Respect for the Aged Day (third Monday of September) and the Autumnal Equinox Day (around 22nd or 23rd). These can create busier conditions on some transport routes and at popular visitor spots. It’s wise to book accommodation and key train journeys in advance if traveling during these holiday periods. Outside of these weekends, most attractions are quite relaxed.

Recommended Activity in SEPTEMBER

September is an excellent time for outdoor exploration such as hiking and as the weather cools. Consider visiting higher altitude areas like Oku-Nikko, Nasu, Kusatsu Onsen, Shima Onsen, or Minakami, where you might catch the very first hints of autumn foliage towards the end of the month. It’s also an excellent time for enjoying nature in places like Mount Akagi as the summer heat subsides. Harvest season begins, offering opportunities to enjoy local produce, and various autumn festivals start appearing on local calendars. Exploring the historical towns of Kawagoe, Tochigi, or Mashiko becomes more comfortable, and Ibaraki’s coastline offers pleasant walks before the winter chill sets in.
