There is an old saying in Japan when it comes to fine traditional textiles: “Nishijin in the West, Kiryu in the East” (西の西陣、東の桐生).
Kiryu City in Gunma Prefecture, close to Tokyo boasts an incredible 1,300-year history as a powerhouse of Japanese silk weaving. But what makes Kiryu-ori (桐生織) truly extraordinary is its sheer versatility. While many historic textile hubs specialize in a single signature style, Kiryu mastered seven distinct traditional weaving techniques.
From high-density textured silks favored by Edo-period nobility to airy summer openworks and intricate double-layer brocades, each technique offers a completely different tactile experience and aesthetic.

Omeshi-ori (お召し織) is one of Kiryu’s most prestigious traditional pre-dyed silk weaving methods. Historically, the term Omeshi stems from the honorific Japanese word omeshi-naru (“to wear”), as this luxurious, high-grade silk was famously favored by shogun nobility during the Edo period. It is typically woven as kijaku (着尺)—a full bolt length of fabric tailored specifically for making a single kimono.
Unlike perfectly flat silks, Omeshi-ori is famous for its distinct, fine-grained texture called shibo (surface puckering or ripples). This texture gives the silk a rich tactile feel, a refined matte luster, and excellent resistance to wrinkling.
To create the characteristic shibo texture, the weft (horizontal) silk threads undergo an intense twisting process on a traditional machine called a Hatcho twisting machine (八丁撚糸機). When the fabric is finished after weaving, these high-twist threads contract, giving the silk its signature springy, dimensional surface.
The secret behind the fabric’s crisp drape and durability lies in its weave density: it contains over 100 warp (vertical) threads per single centimeter! Packed this tightly, the resulting silk is incredibly fine, structured, and long-lasting.

Yoko-Nishiki-ori (緯錦織), or Weft-Brocade Weaving, is a luxurious patterned silk technique renowned for its rich color depth and elaborate designs. The word Nishiki traditionally refers to fine brocades that resemble vibrant paintings. In Yoko-Nishiki-ori, the intricate patterns are formed horizontally across the fabric using multiple colored weft (horizontal) threads. This technique is most famously used to create opulent fukuro-obi (袋帯)—the grand, formal sashes worn on special occasions.
This craft relies on yarn-dyed silk threads (sakizome) woven on complex Jacquard looms (ジャカード機). This precise setup allows weavers to control every individual thread, creating detailed, multi-dimensional motifs.
The foundation of the fabric is built on a single, uniform color for the warp (vertical) threads. The entire pattern—as well as the background texture—is then brought to life exclusively by weaving passing rows of different colored weft (horizontal) threads.
What sets Kiryu’s Yoko-Nishiki-ori apart is its extraordinary color richness. Artisans routinely use eight or more distinct thread colors in the weft alone! This stacking of varied silk threads produces an astonishingly rich, tapestry-like color depth that catches the light from every angle.

Tate-Nishiki-ori (経錦織), or Warp-Brocade Weaving, is an elegant brocade technique where complex motifs are formed primarily through the vertical warp threads. This stands in fascinating contrast to Yoko-Nishiki-ori (where the pattern is formed by horizontal weft threads).

While many modern brocades use horizontal threads to build complex pictures, Tate-Nishiki-ori is an ancient concept modernized on a Jacquard loom (ジャカード機). The elaborate designs come directly from manipulating multi-colored vertical warp threads.
To bring these detailed patterns to life, artisans use three or more distinct thread colors specifically in the warp. Setting up these multi-colored warp threads on a loom requires extreme precision before weaving even begins.
To bind the intricate vertical threads together and add textural depth, two or more colors of weft (horizontal) threads are woven in using an alternating beating technique.

Unlike techniques that focus multi-colored threads in only one direction, Futsuu-ori requires two or more colors for both the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads. This dual-axis color design gives patterns remarkable depth and contrast.
To give the double-layer fabric its characteristic crispness, smooth drape, and durability, it is woven at an exceptionally high density.
– Warp (Vertical): At least 120 threads per centimeter.
– Weft (Horizontal): At least 40 threads per centimeter.
This double-layer weave achieves its crisp structure using over 120 warp threads per centimeter and multi-colored threads in both directions!
Ukidate-ori (浮経織), or Floating-Warp Weaving, is a sophisticated pattern-weaving technique famous for giving woven textiles a dimensional, almost hand-embroidered appearance. Woven on Jacquard looms using pre-dyed silk threads (sakizome), this technique is a favorite for producing opulent, textured fukuro-obi (袋帯) sashes.
In this technique, selected vertical warp threads literally “float” above the surface of the base fabric in designated pattern areas. This raised thread effect catches the light and creates a lush, dimensional texture that closely resembles hand embroidery.
While the base structure of the cloth is built with standard ground warp and weft threads, the intricate color motifs are enhanced using e-nuki (“picture wefts”). These are supplementary horizontal threads—distinctly thicker and differently colored than the background weft—woven on top to lay down vivid pattern accents.
Ukidate-ori uses two or more distinct warp colors and achieves an astonishing warp density of over 150 vertical threads per centimeter! Packed this tightly, the base fabric remains smooth, sturdy, and perfectly supportive of the raised floating motifs.

Mojiri-ori (綟り織), often known as leno or gauze weave, is a delicate, openwork technique prized for creating lightweight, breathable silk textiles. While standard fabrics are tightly interlaced at rigid right angles, Mojiri-ori intentionally creates sheer, mesh-like openings in the fabric. This method is traditionally used to produce kijaku (着尺) fabric bolts destined for cool, elegant summer kimonos.
In conventional weaving, warp and weft threads cross in a basic grid. In Mojiri-ori, adjacent vertical warp threads cross over and twist left and right around one another . This twisting locks the horizontal threads in place while leaving deliberate gaps, giving the silk its sheer transparency and exceptional ventilation.
Creating these complex twisted patterns on a Jacquard loom (ジャカード機) requires highly specialized equipment, such as a mon-furui (紋振るい, a pattern doup attachment) or a kawari-osa (変わり筬, a modified reed mechanism).
Mojiri-ori is the foundation for Japan’s most famous traditional summer silk fabrics, including sha (紗, an all-over airy gauze weave) and ro (絽, an alternating pattern of solid weave and sheer gauze stripes).

Tate-gasuri Mon-ori (経絣紋織), or Warp Ikat Pattern Weaving, is a masterclass in combining yarn-dyeing art with complex loom technology. It integrates kasuri (絣)—the traditional Japanese ikat technique where warp (vertical) threads are selectively pre-dyed in precise sections to create soft, characteristic “blurred” edges—with Jacquard pattern weaving. This technique is typically crafted as kijaku (着尺) fabric bolts for elegant kimonos.

Te-kukuri (手くくり): Hand-tying sections of thread with resist bindings before dipping into dye.
Ita-jime (板締め): Clamping tightly folded bundles of thread between carved wooden boards to prevent dye penetration.
Katagami Nassen (型紙捺染): Applying dye directly onto aligned thread bundles using intricate Japanese paper stencils.

You can board the Tobu Limited Express Ryomo train at Asakusa Station and arrive in Kiryu in under two hours, trading the urban sprawl for a historic textile town steeped in 1,300 years of living craft heritage.
